Takeshi Kuranari, an ordinary college student, enters the underwater theme park LeMU. Suddenly, an accident locks him and six others inside, 51 meters underwater. With rescue unlikely, Takeshi explores LeMU with the mysterious Tsugumi and part-time employee You, searching for a way to the surface. A theme park filled with hopes and dreams in the past now remains submerged in the endless, mystical blue ocean. Are hopes and dreams still lingering beneath? Or is there an even greater secret? Enduring crisis after crisis, they work to escape! I’m making this review remain positive for now, although I suspect it may go negative the more I play through my playthrough.

Ever17 is often hailed as Kotaro Uchikoshi’s crowning achievement, and it’s easy to see why; many of the compelling ideas, philosophies, plot twists, scientific themes, character moments, and messages woven into his later works trace back to Ever17, still shining in this remake. All that being said, I’m not totally convinced by Ever 17 or its beat; for a story about being trapped in a sunken underwater amusement park, there’s a disappointing lack of Real Events. The characters just walk around waiting for something to happen, and most of the game is spent getting familiar with them—lovely if you like them, exhausting if you don’t.
