GAMES WITH A MISSION

Games that are fun, look good – and deal with important topics at the same time? There is such a thing! Most computer games want to do one thing above all else: entertain really well. Like the roulette online casino does. That this is often successful is shown by the unbroken popularity of games, with which the computer games industry turns over billions every year. Most games deliberately have little to do with reality and almost never deal with social issues.

So-called serious games, on the other hand – i.e. computer games that are supposed to have a learning effect while you’re playing them – can often do one thing above all else: go wrong. Because well intended does not equal well made.

OUR LIST FOR YOU

Trouble in paradise: Botanicula

Botanicula is certainly the cutest game on this list. But the visuals are deceiving! Although everything seems to be fine in the cute paradise of a treetop, a dark creature has taken up residence there, causing the leaves and ultimately the entire tree to die.

Five mismatched friends – a stick, a mushroom, a seed, a kind of pumpkin fruit and a winged insect – set out to save their tree. In the classic point-and-click game, you have to solve a lot of puzzles and escape from a lot of enemies – not only the evil that has taken up residence in the tree, but also large insects and predators.

Botanicula comes from the developer studio Amanita Design, which has already presented other fantastic point-and-clicks. Botanicula turns the screw even tighter: on the treetop, the game’s only setting, there exists an entire ecosystem full of peculiar creatures that are sometimes helpful (and sometimes not). Just observing their interaction is a big part of the game’s appeal.

Ultimately, the goal is to bring this very ecosystem back into balance. The fact that this happens with the help of tricky puzzles in a magical world doesn’t hurt.

Quickly save the world: Earth Games

Earth Games is an association of students, game designers and climate experts who together produce entertaining, scientifically based games on environmental topics. Mainly, these are mobile games, sometimes based on well-known game mechanics.

Life of Pika, for example, is a vertical scroller in which you support a cute whistling rabbit on its journey north – away from its warming habitat.

Climate Quest, on the other hand, is a short tactics game in the style of the Civilization series, in which the goal is to place scientists where they are needed. Take a look at the cute 8-bit graphics here.

A Caribou’s Tale is based on the gameplay of the arcade classic Breakout. The goal: to feed a family of caribou, which gets harder the warmer the climate gets.

The studio has developed a total of 10 games so far, all of which are available free of charge for iOS and Android, entertaining and designed with love.

Art disguised as games: Causa Creations

Cause Creations consists of the two artists, activists and game designers Tilmann Hars and Georg Hobmeier, who produce so-called social awareness games in changing collaborations. The spectrum of topics the games deal with ranges from loot art to the life of a street shoe seller in Dar es Salaam to an anti-war shooter.

The Resource Paradox and Burn The Boards games, on the other hand, deal with environmental issues. The Resource Paradox is a game about land theft by oil companies in rural India. In the classic strategy game, the goal is to build and manage a village while air pollution is getting worse and land is getting scarcer.

At the same time, the oil company is to be prevented from continuing its activities. Later in the game, this is achieved either with the help of armed guerrilla troops or through lawyers, depending on how the game develops.

Burn The Boards, on the other hand, is a mobile puzzle game in which you, as a worker in an electronics recycling company, have to disassemble chipsets in as few moves as possible for a starvation wage. Each move poisons the character a little more, and the starvation wage must also pay for food, work materials, and doctor’s visits. Burn The Boards has become an entertaining and challenging puzzle game – which at the same time comes up with a bitter punchline.
