Who remembers in 2020 when Cyberpunk 2077 created a wave of hate and discontent? The latest-gen consoles had barely been released when one of the most anticipated games on these platforms began to be publicly lynched, causing a wave of refunds. CD Projekt Red has just shared its more than satisfactory financial results for its new Cyberpunk franchise. The title, which has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide (figures are as of October 2023), has managed the feat of exceeding 3 billion Zloty, the Polish currency. The main reason this strategy worked was because Cyberpunk 2077 has always been a great game. Revolutionizing role-playing games on its scale, it was able to establish itself within the PC ecosystem before conquering consoles. We can’t say it enough, but CD Projekt’s mistake was to release its title on old machines, dispersing talent on platforms not optimized for the game’s performance. Once this mistake was fixed, all the studio had to do was continue to deliver the quality work we know it for, and the results were there.
News about The Witcher and its sequel
Now it’s time for the future. The studio shares the distribution of its teams on the various projects in progress. We can see that the one that requires the most resources is Project Polaris, the 4th opus of The Witcher saga, which promises us new adventures around a new hero. More than 64% of CD Projekt is dedicated to its development, so we should have new ones soon.
Let’s not forget that the Polish studio is also working on related projects, such as Project Sirius which will be a spin-off of The Witcher. The sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 has 47 developers. The conclusion is that Project Orion is still in its infancy. The new Hadar license is still on the way, as well as the remake of The Witcher and other projects.
